The introduction of industry standards such as SNOMED CT, ICD-10, LOINC, and RxNorm is an important step toward achieving the goals of interoperability and information sharing. Yet healthcare organizations still face notable challenges to laying the best frameworks for normalizing data to these standards. Since there is no one standard that addresses all healthcare information, clinical and financial data must be “cleaned” and appropriately mapped to a single source of truth to remove semantic ambiguity.

RxNorm: Addressing Medication Information Exchange

Health information exchange is a multifaceted undertaking that encompasses the introduction and adoption of a variety of industry standards to support interoperability. Just as LOINC addresses data exchange for laboratory information, RxNorm provides the foundation for sharing medication information.

LOINC: A Better Path to Laboratory Data Exchange

Part Three of our Terminology Standards series we introduced SNOMED CT as a comprehensive standard for exchanging clinical content in an accurate, meaningful way. In this installment, we explore use of LOINC for exchange of laboratory and clinical information.

Value-based care models demand more collaborative care delivery built on the timely sharing of critical patient information, such as labs, vital signs, or clinical documents. Because data is represented in different ways across local and disparate systems, healthcare organizations face notable challenges to sharing, exchanging, and aggregating data in an accurate, meaningful way.

National Library of Medicine and Meaningful Use

Meaningful Use and the impending ICD-10 implementation is all the buzz!  Understanding terminology management for SNOMED-CT, ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS leaves many folks with their heads spinning.  What does this all mean?  Is there a one stop shopping to help me (save me)?  The good news is that there are resources available. The not so good news is that availability does not necessarily equal ease of use.

LOINC and Meaningful Use

Under the terms of the Health Information Technology (HITECH) Act, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will provide incentive payments to health care providers who adopt certified electronic health record technology and use it to demonstrate meaningful use of that technology.
